From early childhood, through my school years, my marriage, and my part in rearing three children, Christian Science has been a beacon, a bulwark, and a blessing. Through innumerable and varied phases of human experience it has brought me satisfying answers and solutions.
One of our sons had quite a severe leg infection when he was about seven years old. Becoming alarmed at the physical evidence, I was tempted to probe the affected area. With deep sincerity I prayed to be shown what to do. Opening a copy of the Journal. I began reading an article. My thought was alerted by this quotation in it from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 462): "The anatomy of Christian Science teaches when and how to probe the self-inflicted wounds of selfishness, malice, envy, and hate." Surely this was a direct answer! A great deal of selfishness had been evident in the boy's attitude during this period, and he was asked to work with me on overcoming every selfish thought and action. As his attitude changed, his leg was completely healed without the use of any material remedy.
Our other son had a badly infected toe when he was very young. I had worked in Christian Science to see his true selfhood as the perfect child of God, pure and free, but the healing did not come. One morning at two o'clock I awoke with a great sense of fear about this condition. I went in to him, and because I could not gain peace of mind, I called a practitioner. She asked me to work in Science and said she would give treatment immediately. I worked steadily for two hours, using Mrs. Eddy's writings. Then, very suddenly, all sense of fear completely left me. I had that glorious peace of mind we receive when we actually realize that God, good, is All.
