Thought Watching

From the March 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In giving what she termed "the song of Christian Science," Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, was summarizing what had been a theme of her life from childhood. "The song of Christian Science is, 'Work— work—work—watch and pray.'"Message to The Mother Church for 1900, p. 2; These words stand out as though carved in the granite of her native hills. This "song" had indeed supported our Leader's life purpose, and thus from her innermost heart she could pass it on to her followers that they too might make it their song.

Three times she stresses the need to work, pointing out as well its defense and bulwark: to "watch and pray." Therein she emphasizes the importance of right, scientific activity to speed progress along all avenues of right endeavor. It is a challenge to do some good thought watching. There is no more relationship between Christian Science and inactivity than there is between the speed of an engine and the broken wheelbarrow left standing in the field. Christian Science is the religion of putting into practice the truths it sets forth. It is not mere theory.

One may in a degree understand and appreciate the truths of Christian Science and glimpse the beauty, sublimity, and majestic unfoldment that lie before him; but unless he puts these truths into operation, he is standing on a platform that never moves in any direction. Christian Science is vital, living, revealing Truth to all those who will follow its directives. This requires a letting go of mere theory and a holding fast to operative, active truths that can transform and regenerate one's life.
