In Christian Science we learn the meaning of sacrifice and its reward. What must we sacrifice? Science assures us that nothing real can ever be sacrificed; we can sacrifice only a sense of limitation, the false sense of self in matter, the belief that life, substance, and intelligence are material.
And what is the reward of this sacrifice? Again, Science makes clear that it is a completely satisfying and demonstrable understanding of true substance and being as purely spiritual, harmonious, immortal, and wholly good, exempt from any form of limitation or loss. Irving C. Tomlinson records that Mrs. Eddy once said, in substance, "Be willing to render up your all on the altar of Truth, for it is Science to know that what you sacrifice for this will be rewarded seven-fold."Twelve Years with Mary Baker Eddy, p. 81;
Christian Scientists strive to follow Mrs. Eddy's behest by demonstrating unselfishness in their home, business, and church affairs. Sometimes a church building, remodeling, or development program affords them a special opportunity to put self aside.
