When the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was presented to me as a young adult by my mother, I told her that I could not understand how reading a book could heal anyone of a bodily illness. Mother had been healed in Christian Science many years before, but I had not known of this, and she knew that Science would help me. At this time it seemed I was suffering from a condition diagnosed as severe anemia bordering on leukemia. Lengthy medical treatment had not improved this condition, and so I decided to read and study the textbook.
Besides the physical condition, I had always been afraid of being alone, of meeting people, and of speaking in public. Added to this was fear for the safety of two family members who were frequently in combat during the Second World War. Because of severe dizziness I was afraid to walk on the street alone and often would lean against a building in an effort to alleviate this. I was very frequently absent from my work because of illness.
