The most cherished memory of my childhood is the one of my first day in the Christian Science Sunday School. Prior to this one of my treasures had been a book of children's Bible stories. But as much as I loved the stories, I rebelled at accepting their concept of God as a gigantic physical presence, dominating His children through fear and wrath. Impressed by the harmony manifested in the home of a neighboring family of Christian Scientists, my mother enrolled me in the Christian Science Sunday School.
The first Sunday that I attended, the teacher replied to my question: "What is God?" by opening her Bible and showing me the words, "God is love" (I John 4:8). This Scriptural authority established the truth of God's incorporeality and infinitude. This was a God I could understand. I have never forgotten the wonderful sense of satisfaction that I felt that Sunday morning. How clear it is to the child thought that only infinite Love can be the eternal God!
I am especially grateful that my children have also had the privilege of being pupils in the Christian Science Sunday School and that my grandchildren are presently enrolled. It was through the efforts of one of these children that I was awakened to the rich blessings of membership in The Mother Church and one of its branches.
