Disarming the Threat of War

From the August 1969 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Disarmament is a subject in which men of goodwill all over the world are deeply interested. Statesmen and politicians who have the welfare of their own nations at heart seek to keep armaments so proportioned that their nation may hold the preponderance of power. Inevitably armaments assume a more and more astronomical size. Can the individual do anything effective to help disarm the threat inherent in this situation without at the same time endangering the defense of right? Christian Science answers that he can.

This Science teaches that we live in a mental world, that all phenomena are the effect of thought; that destruction of any kind, whether it be in the form of war, sin, sickness, or death, is the result of destructive thinking; that constructive good expressed as peace, health, purity, and abundant life is the result of the constructive divine intelligence which is God. The former it terms mortal mind; the latter, divine Mind.

Further, Christian Science teaches that mortal mind is the false belief of mind in matter, without basis in fact; that everything factual is in and of Spirit, divine Mind. In our modern world we are subjected to a great many so-called facts; but the basic, true fact is that life is spiritual and that therefore everything real has a spiritual basis. Thought that is wholly spiritual is wholly factual; so we pray to have that Mind represented in us which was in Christ Jesus.
