The reading of the Lesson-Sermon during the Christian Science church services on Sunday is a joyous occasion during which healings can be expected to take place. Healings are possible because the reading is an outpouring of the Word of Truth, and Truth heals.
Every lesson found in the Christian Science Quarterly is a clear pathway of thought leading from the subject and Golden Text to the last words of the final section. Along this pathway are practical spiritual ideas that must be perceived, understood, and utilized. These ideas are much like unmined treasure until they are revealed. They emerge most clearly at the Sunday service when Christly understanding flows freely through the reading. The truth of Christian Science appears to all receptive listeners, each one finding what he individually needs.
An interesting contrast can be made between the function of the high priest on the annual Day of Atonement, during and after the time of Moses, and the daily opportunity for consecration that the Lesson-Sermon gives. Once a year the high priest three times entered the small room in the tabernacle called the Holy of Holies, where the ark of the covenant rested and where God's presence was supposed to dwell. After performing rites of purification for the people, the high priest came before them for further ceremonies. All students of Christian Science are afforded the sanctuary of the Lesson-Sermon for entering into consecrated communion with God each day as they prepare both for the day and for the Sunday service. Each day's work brings spiritual unfoldment to meet daily needs, and the understanding and inspiration gained throughout the week are brought to culmination at the service.
