True pioneers are progressive, persistent, and purposeful. They express the vision, courage, and right activity that lead to the betterment of society. A dictionary definition tells us in part that a "pioneer" is "one who goes before, as into the wilderness, preparing the way for others to follow."
In the wilderness the frightened Israelites were immobilized by the prospect of Pharaoh's approaching army and the barrier of the Red Sea. Their courageous leader, Moses, heard God's command, "Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward."Ex. 14:15 He obeyed, and the sea parted for the Israelites to pass over safely. Because of God's guidance and his enlightened expression of the pioneering spirit, Moses led the children of Israel in a succession of compelling, spiritual victories.
Evidences of progress seen today in mankind's growing dominion over his material environment are significant. But the blessings resulting from the expression of the pioneering spirit in the spiritualization of human thought are even more meaningful. As Christian Scientists, we are grateful for Moses' heartening example. We work earnestly to live also in accord with the teachings of Christ Jesus, who said, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do."John 14:12 And we strive to demonstrate the pioneering spirit of the healing Christ just as our forward-looking Leader, Mrs. Eddy, did. As we gain one spiritual victory after another in our homes, our churches, and our communities, our expression of the pioneering spirit of Christ-like healing is increasingly triumphant.
