Can Drugs Expand Thought?

From the October 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What makes an individual turn to drugs? Isn't it because he thinks that he will gain a more enlightened experience and be released from the pressures and frustrations around him? The desire for greater freedom of thought is actually a very natural desire. This is because one's real conscious being already exists as the infinite expression of infinite Mind. But the pressing questions are : What is the way to demonstrate this freedom? How does one bring out his own individuality in a more expansive way, increase his abilities, broaden his sphere of thought and action? Is it through the use of drugs?

On the human scene it is becoming increasingly clear that reliance on drugs is actually restricting, not liberating but frequently bringing great suffering. Unhealthy reactions and complex problems in human relationships are often the result. Also the alarming increase in drug addiction is producing tragic consequences leading to violence, crime, and broken homes. So what is supposed to be liberating is really enslaving.

Christian Science goes right to the root of this widespread problem. To the individual who is relying on drugs to expand his thought it reveals that his real being is spiritual, created of God and already complete. Science shows him that he is not a restless mortal imprisoned within a matter body and weighed down by many pressures from which he desperately tries to escape. His true intelligence stems not from a finite mind inside a material brain. He is the direct expression of one infinite Mind or God. He does not have to get free; he is free now to express his true individual being. Thus one can discover for himself that his freedom and satisfied living are not dependent for one moment on a chemical.
