Dealing with Pollution

From the October 1970 issue of The Christian Science Journal

[Since he knows that all problems in human experience stem from mental causes the Christian Scientist must recognize and act on his particular responsibility in dealing with the problem of pollution.]

One of the most serious problems confronting most industrialized nations today, particularly in the Western world, is the pollution of air and water. Major programs are being launched in many places to deal with this problem, to reduce the level of pollution in rivers, lakes, harbors, and in the atmosphere surrounding large urban centers.

As concerned citizens we can certainly welcome and support such efforts to correct this situation. We could hardly be indifferent to the contamination of what are considered to be the most important elements necessary for human life itself. But, as with so many human problems, dealing with the surface symptoms and the more obvious causes may not actually solve the problem. It seldom does. What is needed in the pollution problem is a more thorough digging for root causes.
