I am grateful for the many healings I have witnessed in Christian Science, and for Mary Baker Eddy, who gave this great religion to the world.
For some years, before becoming a student myself, I had a very wrong idea about Mrs. Eddy. A cousin, who was an ardent student, had tried many times to tell me about Christian Science. One day she tossed a Christian Science Journal over to me. She said, "Look! This teaching has gone all over the world." As I examined the lists of churches in the back and read the many beautiful articles, I saw that God was certainly back of it. The next Sunday my family attended a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and Sunday School. We have loved it all the years since and have served it in many ways.
The healings that came to our family made us realize that we could trust God to solve every problem. The healing of broken bones on several occasions has meant much to me, as it has given me a satisfying feeling that no problem is too great for God. My first experience involved the breaking of my ankle. Although I could walk a little on the foot, I was fearful and bothered by the crunching sound of the bones. I limped into the practitioner's office, and when I explained my fears to her, she said to me vehemently: "Sense testimony!" From that moment the unpleasant sound was gone. The whole appearance and feeling of the ankle became completely normal, and it has remained so these many years. I knew that behind her vehement rejection of the sense testimony of an injured mortal was the practitioner's prayerful acknowledgment of God's harmonious government of His spiritual idea, man and the universe.
