Having been raised in Christian Science, I had the benefit of its great blessings while growing up. My mother, a consecrated student of Christian Science, took care of any problems I had. Because of her prayerful support I had a childhood free from so-called children's diseases, with the exception of chicken pox, and this was healed quickly and easily. But because my way had been made so easy, I did not really make this great truth my own. Then came World War II, and I had to enter our country's service. Alone and on my own as a Christian Scientist in a large training base, I met my first real challenge.
One day I noticed on the bulletin board an announcement placed by a Christian Science Wartime Minister that there were Christian Science services for men on the base. Thus began my seasoning, for this wise and dedicated Wartime Minister, sensing my predicament, began through many meetings to build my understanding of the truth of God and man so that I could effectively meet the trial that lay ahead of me.
After completing training I spent twenty-three months on shipboard in two war zones. Not once did I have to shoot to kill, and through fire at sea, hurricane, and a ship beginning to break apart in a storm, and many other trials, I was fully protected from harm.
