I had been raised in the Church of England and loved my church very much. I had heard of Christian Science, but it meant nothing to me until it met a great need of my husband. He had suffered severely from mustard gas in the First World War. About a year after he was sent home, he was operated on because of damage done by this gas to the lining of his stomach. A year after that he returned to the hospital for further attention and was told there was no hope for his recovery. He was given only a few months to live.
At the time we owned and operated a hotel in the north of England. One day a young American came for a short stay. Through him my husband learned of Christian Science. He told my husband that his wife had been healed of consumption by Christian Science. I was out at the time of their discussion. When I returned, my husband asked me to go to a certain address and get a little book. That was all he could tell me about it. The address was that of a Christian Science Reading Room. There the librarian said, "This is the book you want," and handed me a small copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
For weeks I had no opportunity to see the book at all, because my husband carried it in his pocket constantly. Within a very short time he was free of smoking and social drinking. Next he sought help from a Christian Science practitioner for the severe pains that continually recurred due to the damage to his stomach. Under regular treatment by the practitioner he was healed.
