Christian Science has truly blessed me and improved my life. In the few years I have been a student, I have experienced undeniable proofs that Christian Science is a wonderful, healing, and exact Science.
After college graduation I had a few months to spend before going on active duty as an officer in the United States Air Force. During these three months I learned of Christian Science through a high school friend. I began the study of Christian Science and started reading the Lesson-Sermons. Then I went on active duty at a base over three thousand miles from home. The change was startling. I now found myself in a situation where the social pressures of military life were strong. I became disinterested in Science. However, during the few months that I was studying Christian Science I was healed of the need to wear glasses. The proof of this was evidenced by my passing the necessary physical examination for pilot training, something I had not been able to do for two years despite several attempts. Before studying Christian Science, I had not been qualified for pilot training because I needed corrective lenses.
I was accepted for training, and received my wings eighteen months later. After I had stopped studying Science, I continued to feel that it had some worth—but not for me, despite the healing of the eye problem. I fell more and more into the social demands of military life and slowly became a heavy drinker. About a year after receiving my wings I was in a large Eastern city one weekend on leave. On Sunday morning I arose late and started going from tavern to tavern trying to find joy, adventure, and identity in alcohol. By early evening I was quite inebriated. Then the thought came that this was not for me. But what was? Go to church! Go to what church? Go to a Christian Science church! I discovered that there was an evening service at a Church of Christ, Scientist, just a few blocks away. I staggered into that church. I was welcomed, and I felt very much at home. After the service I walked out completely free from the effects of alcohol, firmly convinced that I wanted Christian Science. I was healed of the desire to drink.
