Just before the First World War I heard the words "Christian Science." I became acquainted with a Christian Science practitioner, who told me about Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and that many people had been healed just by reading it.
From early childhood I had attended Sunday School and church regularly in a German Protestant Evangelical church. During the First World War our church was forbidden to have any more German services. At this time Christian Science again came to mind, and I went by train to the nearest city where there was a Christian Science Reading Room. I feared that I could never understand the Bible in English because I had learned it in German.
In the Reading Room I found that Science and Health was translated into German. I opened the book and read a few sentences in both languages. Then it was as if a light began to shine in my consciousness. I can still feel the sense of joy and inspiration that came over me, and this gave me the courage to buy the English Bible.
