"I can of mine own self do nothing." John 5:30; These are the words of Christ Jesus, the most able man who ever lived, and without explanation they seem strangely inappropriate. How could a man who instantly healed the sick and raised the dead—who walked on the water, stilled a storm with a word, passed through closed doors—how could a man like that admit such a thing?
Christian Science answers by explaining this attitude of mind to be the very basis of Jesus' superb mastery of matter and all its conditions. Mrs. Eddy says, "His holy humility, unworldliness, and self abandonment wrought infinite results." Retrospection and Introspection, pp. 91, 92;
Better than anyone in his era or in ours, the master Christian understood the allness of God, and therefore man's total dependence on Him for life, substance, and intelligence. Jesus' words imply that he thought of God as the governing Principle of man's being—as omniscient, omniactive Mind or Spirit, the only real knower and doer in the universe.
