The Healing Power of Kindness

From the December 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

What is kindness, really? Surely it is not a mere gesture. It is not a role we play to win favor or to placate our own conscience. True kindness is genuine unselfish love.

Kindness is a healing power. In fact, a determination to express it can be a winning factor in harmonizing our homes, offices, businesses, and lives—when all the conscientious talking and admonishing imaginable, all the arranging and rearranging, may prove inadequate.

I know of an instance where unselfed love and wisdom led a family to take a despairing young friend into their home. They recognized that only the tenderest kindness would open her thought for the needed spiritual awakening and growth. Their kindness saved her, and gave her a whole new life through Christian Science.
