Truly Hearing

From the December 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To "hear as the learned"—these words from the Bible mean much. Many who do not have, as yet, much spiritual perception may believe they have good hearing. But unless one understands spiritual being, he does not really "hear as the learned." And it is God, the Father-Mother Mind, who is the source of this perception. The prophet says, "He wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned." Isa. 50:4;

Even according to common human experience, hearing is something more than material; it is mental. Thought hears. One who has good human hearing may not hear at all if his thought is focused intently on something else. If he is reading a book, he may not hear when someone speaks to him. Or it might be truer to say that he hears a different voice. He is mentally hearing the author's message—his thoughts. This hints that there is more to hearing—and speaking—than material sound.

Of the true hearing Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health: "The ear does not really hear. Divine Science reveals sound as communicated through the senses of Soul— through spiritual understanding." Science and Health, p. 213;
