The Importance of Reversing Error

From the February 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

An important point of the faultless logic of Christian Science is that every material error is a counterfeit of some spiritual truth. Error has no actual power to reverse truth, for, in spiritual reality, Truth cannot be reversed. But, in the realm of the human, good and evil, reality and unreality, seem to mingle.

Until human beings are better educated in the irreversible reality of spiritual Creation, it is necessary for Science to explain the subtlety of evil's counterfeiting of Truth, or good. Through its various modes evil assumes an existence it cannot give itself, but seems to have through inversion of the one and only creation there is, namely, God's creation.

Mary Baker Eddy writes: "Now a lie takes its pattern from Truth, by reversing Truth. So evil and all its forms are inverted good." Unity of Good, p. 53; Elsewhere Mrs. Eddy explains this metaphysical point in another way: "Evil in the beginning claimed the power, wisdom, and utility of good; and every creation or idea of Spirit has its counterfeit in some matter belief. Every material belief hints the existence of spiritual reality; and if mortals are instructed in spiritual things, it will be seen that material belief, in all its manifestations, reversed, will be found the type and representative of verities priceless, eternal, and just at hand." Miscellaneous Writings, pp. 60, 61;
