A Prophet Is a See-er

From the February 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Prophecy is usually thought of as foretelling the future, predicting human events yet to come. But this falls far short of the Christianly scientific definition. In Science and Health Mrs. Eddy defines "prophet" as "a spiritual seer; disappearance of material sense before the conscious facts of spiritual Truth." Science and Health, p. 593;

The word "prophet" is often taken to mean one who speaks for God. But to speak as God directs him to speak, the true prophet must look at things as God knows them. He must be a spiritual seer, or see-er—he must see as God, Spirit, enables him to see. He exemplifies Paul's statement: "Then shall I know even as also I am known." I Cor. 13:12; He discerns the spiritual integrity that comprises man's true character.

A prophet not only has the insight to perceive things as they really are, but as he becomes imbued with the consciousness of spiritual reality he identifies with the "disappearance of material sense before the conscious facts of spiritual Truth." He bears witness to the immortal facts of good so clearly that evil no longer deceives him, even though it seems to be present. He prophesies the perfection of the true nature of God's man and creation. The result is healing.
