The Pastor and the Reader

From the February 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Newcomers to Christian Science church services cannot help but be impressed in some way by the spirituality and deportment of those who conduct these services. It behooves the earnest student of this religion to ask himself, "What can be done to make the office of Reader the blessing it is intended to be, so that both strangers and members will find the services alive with sincerity, inspiration, and healing?"

Our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, states in reference to the divine Principle of Christ Jesus' healing work, "Its only priest is the spiritualized man." Science and Health, p. 141; And John the Revelator asserts that the teachings of Jesus make us "kings and priests unto God." Rev. 1:6;

Mrs. Eddy eliminated from her Church all vestiges of a special, personal priesthood. She was inspired to delegate the duty of pastoring to the Bible and her own book, Science and Health, and to institute for The Mother Church and its branches the office of Reader, First and Second.
