New Director of The Mother Church

From the July 1972 issue of The Christian Science Journal

We are pleased to announce the election of Otto Bertschi, C.S.B., of Zurich, Switzerland, effective May 1, to be a Director of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Bertschi, who has resigned as a member of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship to accept his new position, succeeds Clayton Bion Craig, C. S. B., who is retiring after twenty-three years of service on The Christian Science Board of Directors. Mr. Craig will devote his full time to the teaching and public practice of Christian Science.

Mr. Bertschi becomes the first Christian Scientist from overseas to serve on the Board of Directors. He brings to the post a broad background of experience. He is a native of Zurich, attended public schools there, and is a graduate of the Winterthur Institute of Technology. He was employed for four years in the United States following graduation as an electrical engineer. On his return to Zurich, Mr. Bertschi was associated with the Bureau of Standards of the Society of Swiss Machine Manufacturers. He has traveled extensively in South Africa, Europe, Great Britain, and the United States.

A remarkable healing in Mr. Bertschi's infancy brought his entire family into Christian Science. His father became one of the early workers in Zurich. Mr. Bertschi joined The Mother Church in 1932 and received Primary class instruction in 1936. He became a listed practitioner in 1949, and an authorized teacher of Christian Science in 1952. He served as Committee on Publication for German-speaking Switzerland from 1957 to 1963, when he became a lecturer, a post he held until his election as a Director. He is a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Zurich, which he has served as president, First Reader, executive board member, and in other capacities. Mr. Bertschi will continue to teach his class and hold his association meetings in Zurich.
