My mother was introduced to Christian Science when I was about seven years old. She had barely heard of it, but for some time had been silently rebelling against the concept of a vengeful, corporeal God, which she had been taught to believe in; and so she welcomed and accepted gratefully the Christian Science idea of God as a loving Father-Mother, who is Spirit, wholly good. She began studying and later joined the Church of Christ, Scientist, and enrolled my sister and me in the Sunday School. I am very grateful for having had Sunday School teaching until I reached the age of twenty.
After my marriage we moved our home to a cattle ranch, located thirty miles from town. For six years I held an office position in town, driving the sixty miles each day. Often I would have to drive through blizzard conditions and on icy roads, but I knew God was always present with me, and my early training in the Sunday School supplied me with needed intelligence and trust in divine protection.
I then resigned my position to have a baby, which proved to be a wonderful experience in witnessing God's loving care. The months before the birth were filled with happiness and increased spiritual understanding. The birth itself was completely free of pain or difficulties. During the pregnancy and delivery I had the prayerful treatment of a Christian Science practitioner, so no material medicine was used before, during, or after the child's arrival.
