Future Development: Abundant Good

From the June 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When we understand that God's omnipotent law of good can be trusted, we need not fear or worry about what will develop in the future. True development is the continual activity and unfoldment of Spirit, God. God never would construct sin, disease, or disaster. The only possible and lawful action of omnipotent Spirit is the unfolding of harmony. Future human development brought into line with this truth must be abundantly good.

Sometimes humans mistakenly expect adversity to successively increase. They think perhaps of deterioration as natural and unavoidable. Such matter-based thoughts keep men from accepting the good God is always holding for them.

Our current thoughts about development largely shape our future human experience. We need to find out more about the real and harmonious, the good God establishes in our lives. It is the spiritual understanding of this good that offsets feared evils. Mary Baker Eddy writes: "The true theory of the universe, including man, is not in material history but in spiritual development. Inspired thought relinquishes a material, sensual, and mortal theory of the universe, and adopts the spiritual and immortal." Science and Health, p. 547; Reasoning on this godly and advancing basis, we may well ask ourselves, "Are my thoughts about the future inspired by Spirit so that I am relinquishing anxiety and fear about material results?"
