"The atheism of matter"

From the June 1973 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Many would agree that matter exists. We are convinced of its existence because there is constant concrete evidence of it; it is tangible, we can see it, hear it, smell and taste it.

Matter seems important to us, to the degree we believe it gives life or takes it away, to the degree we believe it gives us intelligence or robs us of it. Those who insist upon the reality of matter are continually looking to it for health, wealth, and happiness.

But what did Christ Jesus say of it? "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."John 6:63; And Mrs. Eddy writes: "Divine metaphysics explains away matter. Spirit is the only substance and consciousness recognized by divine Science."Science and Health, p. 278;
