To have grown up in a home where only love and patient understanding were expressed, to have attended a Christian Science Sunday School from the age of three to twenty, and to have been taught the value of doing one's own prayerful metaphysical work makes me most grateful. I am a third-generation Christian Scientist in our family. The first Christian Science service to be held in this city took place in the living room of my paternal grandparents' home.
The touch of God's guiding hand has been most evident in my life—through my university days, when right decisions and happy relationships were the norm, when I was able to get self out of the way, through many happy years of marriage and the bringing up of our two children. The blessings which have come from relying solely on God, divine Love, to meet our needs, are many. Healings of eczema, a sprained ankle, and an injured thigh muscle are but a few of the physical healings I have experienced.
Early in my marriage I had a skin irritation that gradually covered my hands and forearms. I studied and prayed, as we are taught in Christian Science, realizing that this physical evidence was merely the manifestation of irritated thought. Unlovely thoughts of impatience and resentment toward a relative were uncovered and exposed by my study of the Bible and of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. The first three verses of Isaiah 61 were particularly helpful and a line in verse 3 awakened my thinking. It reads, "The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness." From then on I endeavored to express with every thought and word only praise and loving-kindness to this relative.
