I became acquainted with Christian Science...

From the June 1974 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I became acquainted with Christian Science in 1921 through the healing of a member of my family. Upon looking into this religion I knew immediately that I had found the "pearl of great price" (Matt. 13:46). Then I asked the practitioner who had demonstrated to us the worth of this Science to obtain a copy of the textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and to take out a subscription for The Herald of Christian Science (French Edition) for me. At that time there was no Christian Science periodical translated into Portuguese.

I confess that it wasn't easy for me to assimilate everything I read in the textbook. I gradually began to understand and become accustomed to its unusual language. I tried putting into practice what I understood, and many times the results were satisfactory. To this end, the articles in the Herald helped me greatly. When I came across a testimony that had a certain impact on me because of its demonstration of Mind-healing, I analyzed the explanation given by the writer. Thus I was gaining an understanding of the moral and spiritual demands of Science with respect to successful metaphysical work.

In 1955, I had class instruction. It was a wonderful experience for me. Upon completing the studies I was invited to visit various cities in the United States as the guest of some of my fellow students.
