Testimonies of Healing

Although I had been raised in Christian Science,...

From the January 1975 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Although I had been raised in Christian Science, was a member of The Mother Church, and had been a branch church member, after my marriage I started to drift away from Christian Science. I resigned from the branch church and eventually got completely away from the practice and study of Science. However, I never resigned from The Mother Church, although I felt I should, as I was not maintaining the standards required of a member. I had turned to medical aid for myself and our three children, took the occasional cocktail, and so on.

As I had moved several times, and had never sent in any per capita tax, I didn't receive any correspondence from The Mother Church. I was very content to leave it that way. I felt great antipathy toward Science, and can remember vowing one time that I would never set foot in a Christian Science church again. The children were receiving Sunday School tuition in an orthodox Protestant church, and I attended the services frequently.

Then one day, out of the blue, a letter from The Christian Science Publishing Society arrived. How it found me is a mystery, after all those moves and no contact with Christian Scientists! When I saw the address on the envelope, my reaction was, "Oh, no! I thought I had done with all that." However, I reluctantly opened the letter and read it. It was one sent by the Board of Trustees of the Publishing Society to members of The Mother Church requesting support for The Christian Science Monitor. This letter had far-reaching effects on my life.
