I want to thank God for everything I have learned in Christian Science. I especially want to give thanks for the restoration of my sight.
Many years ago the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, in German translation as well as English, was lent me by someone who lived in the same house. When I began reading it, I discovered that I could read the pages in English—the original by Mrs. Eddy. The words stood out as though illuminated. But the German translation on the opposite page appeared very faint, and I could scarcely make it out. Because of this I consulted the best oculists, who confirmed that I was on the verge of complete blindness. They were amazed that I could still see anything at all. X rays were taken. They showed that the optic nerve had been damaged as the result of an operation. They tried to make some special glasses for me, but this was of no avail. One doctor then said, "Our skill has been exhausted here. Unless God gives you new eyes, you will not be able to see."
I prayed to God, "Give me, O God, the seeing eye, Soul's clear view, that perfection may appear instead of the delusion of error." After many hours of prayer I discovered that I was able to make out the letters of the German translation. I asked a practitioner for prayerful support, which was faithfully given me. She said, "God is your light, ever present, and in light there is no darkness." Since at that time I had a responsible job at a check machine, to be losing my sight was an intolerable condition. There followed what seemed a continual battle between light and darkness. I constantly declared the truth that in God there can be no darkness.
