Over forty years ago I was given a copy of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy. At the time, I was living a carefree life. I had plenty of money, a good business, and good health. I was quite out of touch with any church, and religion seldom entered my thoughts. Soon after leaving school I had come to the conclusion that there was little, if any, consonance between what went on in the churches I had attended and what I knew of Christ Jesus' teachings, except for the moral teachings pertaining to one's relations with other people.
Although I quickly realized that Christian Science was what Jesus practiced and said all should practice, I did not see how much I needed it. I was self-satisfied, selfish, arrogant, and bad-tempered. Nevertheless, I did begin to read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, and I irregularly attended Christian Science services for many years.
Then came World War II and five years of active service and separation from my family. During this time I studied the Bible and Science and Health regularly and began to pray scientifically for all mankind. I received protection from dangers and illness; but above all, Christian Science freed me almost entirely from fear for myself and my family, even when we were separately on the high seas and subject to attack from enemy submarines.
