"If God is good and all-powerful and creates everything, where does evil come from?" The question was raised by a teenage pupil in a Christian Science Sunday School. It is one that has occurred to many people. It is a basic point that must be understood by those who wish to progress in their study of Christian Science.
Our daily life appears to be a mixture of good and bad. It seems that we perceive the nature of our lives by the material senses and evaluate it according to human standards. The product of that evaluation then appears to determine the degree of our peace and happiness.
Such an interpretation of existence locks us into a material universe, because what we accept as true governs to some extent our experience. Subscribing to the popular concept of life, we sentence ourselves to the role of frail mortals, subject to all the jeopardies and limitations of material belief. Consenting to a material interpretation of being means that we submit to the belief that there are two conflicting forces—good and evil—two sources of power at war in our lives.
