My daughter was nine years old when our family spent some vacation days in a tent by Lake Constance. Because of poor weather, we soon returned home. Both our children became seriously ill. Our eight-year-old son was soon well as a result of our prayer in Christian Science. However, our little daughter continued to grow worse.
Since the child had to stay away from school because of the illness, we were required to call a doctor. The doctor diagnosed a serious case of diphtheria and gave the child a drug daily. Every day the doctor expressed new fears for the child's life, and our fear also grew until it seemed insurmountable.
We battled with two trains of thought: one—and this was also the doctor's opinion—that the child had only a small chance to live without the skill of the doctors; the other was that we should rely absolutely on Christian Science, on God's omnipotence and omnipresence. After a bad attack one Sunday, in which the child lost consciousness, we decided to put the child in the arms of divine Love and to dismiss the doctor.
