Healing Accompanies Enlightened Thought

From the February 1976 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Are we seeking the light of spiritual Truth to heal ourselves and help heal the world? If we are, we can be sure that individual harmony and peace in our affairs —in other words, healing—will be the result of our consistent and prayerful efforts. It is not enough to seek healing merely for more ease in matter, or to want to normalize a human situation simply to make life a little more pleasant. But the unselfed desire to understand more of all-inclusive God, good, and the infinite, spiritual nature of the universe, including man as God's image, or idea, is the effectual prayer that opens the door to health and harmony for us.

When we are in bondage to any claim of error, it is a temptation to crave release above all else. A more rewarding and substantial goal, however, and the most important one, would be the overriding desire to gain a better understanding of immortal Principle and of the spiritual law underlying the teachings of Christ Jesus. This understanding made possible his demonstrations of divine power. Although his ministry was notable for many kinds of physical healings, looking deeper we discover that these manifestations of power really served as illustrations of spiritual reality and life based on the divine Principle. God, Principle, governs man and the universe in perfect order and harmony. Jesus' healings were inspired proofs of the control of God, Love, over all.

The search for this heavenly light of spiritual Truth was the motivating force in the life and works of Mrs. Eddy. It resulted in her discovery of the Science of Christ, or Christian Science, and her inspired revelation as set down in the textbook, Science and Health. She too healed the sick and sorrowing who came to her for help. Yet the import of her mission and purpose is much more substantial and more inclusive than this. The answer she gave to a question concerning this indicates how all-encompassing and limitless she understood scientific truth to be. In answer to the question "Is healing the sick the whole of Science?" she replied: "Healing physical sickness is the smallest part of Christian Science. It is only the bugle-call to thought and action, in the higher range of infinite goodness."Rudimental Divine Science, p. 2; And when referring to the works of Jesus, she said, "His purpose in healing was not alone to restore health, but to demonstrate his divine Principle."Science and Health, p. 51;
