During my last year in college I received my greatest gift—an introduction to Christian Science by the young man who was to become my husband. Although at the time I was a youth worker in an orthodox church, I began to attend services in the Church of Christ, Scientist, with him. After our marriage I attended no other church. I loved the quiet beauty of each service and hearing read the wonderful new ideas of God, but it didn't dawn on me that these were scientific truths that could apply to me, until I had my first healing.
It was an instantaneous healing. I had been quite ill, in bed for eight days and getting no better, so I finally asked my husband to call a Christian Science practitioner. She came and sat beside my bed in prayer. I closed my eyes in confidence, and I felt God's closeness. Soon I felt perfectly well. I jumped out of bed, full of radiant joy and energy. For the first time since my illness I wanted to eat something. I felt so strong that I started to clean house.
This healing opened my eyes. After that when I read the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, it was as though a light were shining on the words. They had power. I reasoned that if this was Science —the Science of Life—I could use it to correct problems. For two years I had suffered stomach pain after every meal. I was very careful about what I ate and at one time tried to get by on crackers and milk. Nothing had relieved me. Now, with new hope, using the Concordance to Science and Health, I looked up words relating to this condition, such as food, stomach, pain, and function. I trusted that the correct, scientific truths presented in each reference would help me, and I was healed in a few days. The pain never returned. This was a really marvelous thing—to find the remedy for every ill by looking up the truth about it in the textbook. From that time on Christian Science was of great importance to me. My husband and I became members of The Mother Church and a branch church. We learned to look to God for every need.
