"Can Christian Science help my husband?" Many years ago my mother addressed this question to a friend who was fulfilling Christ Jesus' command, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven" (Matt. 5:16). At the time my father was suffering from severe problems that had made him a physical, financial, and emotional wreck.
My mother's inquiry "Can Christian Science help my husband?" was asked in desperation. She was willing to grasp at any means of help. At her friend's recommendation she made an appointment with a Christian Science practitioner. Mother was so uplifted and filled with hope after that first visit that she conveyed some of the inspiration to my father. He felt impelled to see the practitioner that very same day. The account of his healing is the first testimony in the Journal of May 1941. My father's healing occurred when I was in my mid-teens. I'd already had two severe bouts with surgery.
Since my father's healing, Christian Science has been my only physician, although many years passed before I became a regular student of Science. Christian Science is teaching me that "God is understandable, knowable, and applicable to every human need" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany by Mrs. Eddy, p. 238). Gradually, as human, self-imposed limitations are being put off, I am learning, through increased understanding and demonstration, to know myself more spiritually, to cherish my Godlike nature, and to love more impersonally. This expanding spiritual understanding has more than adequately provided excellent health, abundant energy, needful income, harmonious relationships, and a greater joy. With each proof of God's constant care has come a greater appreciation that there is unlimited love to share and be shared.
