The authority of Truth was in his voice
yet many listened without hearing.
"This people's heart is waxed gross,"
he said—knowing the weight
and denseness of deception
layered on deception, the lies
and half-truths, the walls
that grow between us
and original innocence.
Love was his ambience
yet so many looked without seeing.
"This people's heart is waxed gross,"
he said—knowing the darkness
of uncomprehending, unused affections
that would not welcome light
or answer Love with love.
Yet he was the true husbandman—
patient sower of the Word—
who, in dark and heavy hearts,
planted bright and weightless parables.
