DISCOVERY

From the October 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The wonderful thing about Christian Science
is that although when we first come to it
we're staggered to learn that we've
found God—
the search has just begun.

I know it's tempting to unpack our mental bags,
kick our shoes off, and say "oof,"
but this does not forward the journey—
it is not the moment to settle down, eyes closed,
enmeshed in a web of self-spun contentment,
and whisper, "God will work it all out."
Finding Science is not the end of a grand voyage—
it is the beginning.

True, the oneness of God and man begins
to dawn in thought—we sense it—we feel it—
we grasp it—
but it's all feathery words and promises,
all theories and shimmering lights,
till we ourselves begin to
heal the sick,
raise the dead,
cleanse the lepers,
cast out devils,
till our spiritual glimpses
become constant healing consciousness—

all this—
and not just from the metaphysical sidelines.

These are the waymarks of our journey,
the proofs of our onward march,
the signs that follow—
the discovery that the spirituality of tomorrow
is within our hands today—

the discovery that
the journey ended
has just begun.
