Our Love for Each Other

From the October 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

At the root of the love Christian Scientists feel toward all mankind is a recognition that God is the one Parent. He is Father-Mother to His entire creation. God is Love, and man is the child of this Love. Man is even more—he is the very expression, the emanation of Love. This is his nature, his purpose, his reason for existence. Man's being is to glorify Love, to give evidence—in fact, absolute proof—that Love is the only power, the only presence, the only substance.

A growing perception of Love as the only parent and of man, its precious child, leads inevitably to an increasing appreciation, trust, and understanding among people. As we recognize the cohesive power of Love, we lose sight of man as a mortal entity linked by fragile personal relationships. When our thoughts and acts grow out of an expression of divine Love, then love toward our fellowman becomes effortless and natural.

The Christian Scientist views every individual, without exception, as precious in Love's sight. He strives earnestly to see existence from Love's point of view. It is on this basis that he finds himself impelled to love all mankind. Actually, our love for man tells us much about our love for God. Mary Baker Eddy reminds us, "We should measure our love for God by our love for man; and our sense of Science will be measured by our obedience to God,—fulfilling the law of Love, doing good to all; imparting, so far as we reflect them, Truth, Life, and Love to all within the radius of our atmosphere of thought."Miscellaneous Writings, p. 12;
