Church in Action News and Announcements

'This program is not primarily for Christian Scientists

From the October 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

‘This program is not primarily for Christian Scientists, for we already love Christian Science. Nor was it made to be shown in branch churches," Kay Kyser, manager of The Mother Church's Film and Broadcasting Department, explained. "It was made for the general public and meant to be shown on public television."

The program, "Love Thy Neighbor," represents a major change in The Mother Church's broadcasting policies. The half-hour color production makes no attempt to explain comprehensively the teachings of Christian Science. Rather, it emphasizes the practicality of following the Bible admonition of loving one's neighbor as oneself. ...

The format consists of a series of interviews conducted by Fay McKenzie of the Monitor Radio News Service. She visits with several people. Some are Christian Scientists, some not. They include actress Jean Stapleton, whose role as Edith Bunker on TV is the subject of a sermon by a Methodist Minister, Dr. Thatcher Jordan; former North Carolina State University Chancellor, Dr. John Tyler Caldwell; a North Carolina Episcopal priest, the Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray; and violinist Marylou Speaker of the Boston Symphony. Singing is provided by recording artist Larry Croce.
