What Is Scientific Treatment?

From the February 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It's the realization of the presence of the substance of God, and of God as the source of all individuality; and the hand-in-hand denial of whatever seems to be in contrast to this. Looking more deeply still, the scientific healer knows that the essence of scientific treatment is divine Truth maintaining its perfection and purity everywhere. So reasoning, he sees material sense being outshone—being forbidden any existence, even as a belief, because of Truth's resistless self-expression.

Scientific treatment is Truth correcting error, not people correcting and healing, or mortals helping mortals. Ideally, the Christianly scientific healer, in treatment, loses the sense of himself and his patient as personal objects. Here is how an early Christian Scientist, who knew and talked with Mary Baker Eddy concerning her healing in 1866, wrote of that healing: "At that time it was not clear to Mrs. Eddy by what process she had been instantaneously healed, but she knew that her thought had turned away from all else in contemplation of God, His omnipotence and ever-presence, His infinite love and power. It eventually dawned upon her that this overwhelming consciousness of the divine presence had destroyed her fear and consciousness of disease exactly as the light dispels the darkness."See Robert Peel, Mary Baker Eddy: The Years of Discovery (Boston: The Christian Science Publishing Society, 1966), p. 212;

Let it never be imagined that treatment involves waves or rays of some kind bridging space between two human mentalities, one influencing the other. This would be mesmerism. Treatment is the action and evidence of divine consciousness, Mind, whose infinitude excludes the concepts of material space and time.
