Every Christian Scientist is grateful for the blessings received through studying Christian Science. From childhood I had always believed in God but had only learned to pray routinely.
When I was twenty-two years old, I was in a very serious state physically. I was suffering from pulmonary tuberculosis. I had been married for a year and a half and bedridden for six months. A friend who learned of my despair came to visit me and spoke of Christian Science. I knew nothing about this religion and did not wish to change mine. However, as the doctor had decided upon an operation, and a professor of medicine who was consulted was not at all of the same opinion, I asked my friend to bring me the book of which she had spoken, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
I read a few pages, but reading tired me. In despair I called a Christian Science practitioner. The compassion this person showed surprised me. Something in her gave me courage, and I promised to try and read more. There was immediate improvement, and I began to go out into the fresh autumn air. Then I gradually neglected my reading. I caught a cold and the situation became alarming again.
