Our Hymnal: A Treasury of Praise

From the February 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It must have taken great courage for Paul and Silas to sing praises to God. They had been unjustly accused in a foreign land, severely beaten, and imprisoned in a dungeon with their feet locked in stocks. The situation must have seemed beyond human hope. Yet so confident were they of God's goodness that they prayed and sang hymns of praise to Him. They were freed, and the city magistrates acknowledged the imprisonment to have been unjust (see Acts 16:16-40).

Christian Science enables us to be as certain of God's protection and care as were Paul and Silas, and in the midst of seemingly impossible situations we can say with the Psalmist, "I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify him with thanksgiving." Ps. 69:30;

One day, when one of our sons was an infant, he became very restless and seemed extremely uncomfortable. He did not stop crying or respond to his mother's loving attention and comforting words of truth. Finally she began to see that the child's true Parent, God, was even then caring for him. She could therefore confidently turn the responsibility for his well-being over to his Father-Mother God. Although the child was still crying, she put him down gently and went to the piano to play and sing hymns.
