Destroying the Thought of Disease

From the June 1977 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science insists that in healing sickness it is thought that demands our attention and not a physical condition. The physical body is a mental concept, an illusive picture in mortal thought. It is a distorted, worldly sense of identity, and we are gaining dominion over it by spiritually understanding that our real identity is incorporeal, the infinite idea of God. Mrs. Eddy writes in her Miscellaneous Writings, "Nothing appears to the physical senses but their own subjective state of thought." And she adds further on, "Destroy the thought of sin, sickness, death, and you destroy their existence."Mis., p. 105;

Disease is basically mental—mental in cause and in effect—and it is overcome by spiritualizing consciousness, by bringing thought into harmony with God. This process of spiritualization brings to light what actually is. It reveals the spiritual fact that man is God's perfect likeness, immortal and forever intact, and that man forever coexists with God. Such spiritual truths may seem startling at first. They certainly demand that we ponder them deeply and demonstrate them in healing. Utilizing spiritual truths brings out the true self, God's image, whose senses are purely spiritual. It confirms the presence of the individual spiritual consciousness that is the real man.

Christ Jesus made great demands on prayer. He proved that one can always safely rely on the prayer of spiritual understanding for healing. As can be observed from the gospel record, Jesus cast out disease as evil, restoring health, hope, and harmony to the sick who sought his help. He healed all manner of conditions, the blind, the deaf, the lame, the deformed, the sinful. Furthermore, he encouraged his disciples to follow his example, and he implied that this applied to all who believe. His words were, "Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give."Matt. 10:8; And he also said, "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God."Luke 18:27;
