Thanksgiving! This national holiday is of special significance in our family. It was the day that Christian Science found us. It also confirmed the prophecy of the sweet singer in Isaiah (43:6): "I will say to the north, Give up; and to the south, Keep not back: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth."
As a teen-ager, I became very disillusioned with the religion of my childhood. The kind God, to whom I prayed, answered my innocent, childlike prayers. The difficulty arose in trying to reconcile my loving God with an orthodox concept of a variable God that decreed either misery on one side, or joy on the other. Rather than continue the struggle to try to understand, I dropped away from Sunday School. Reverently, I kept praying to God in my own way.
Soon after this I met the man who was later to become my husband. I was delighted to learn he, too, loved God and was busy working in his church. We were married in the church of his faith. With much humility I tried diligently to accept its teachings, only to find the same limited, fearful concept of God. Almost simultaneously my husband and I agreed to abandon churchgoing entirely. We continued to read the Holy Bible at home.
