Disarming mental malpractice

From the November 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mental malpractice springs from the lying supposition that God, divine Mind, has an opposite—mortal mind—and that man is a mortal being with a material mind capable of thinking evil thoughts.

But the Science of Christianity shatters this supposition with the mighty truth that divine Mind is All and that man is Mind's spiritual, immortal idea. We can destroy mental malpractice by applying this truth. Mrs. Eddy considered this work a necessity in the successful practice of Christian Science Mind-healing. On page 237 of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, she states that students should give daily attention to her words beginning on page 442, line 30, of Science and Health: "Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake."

Mental malpractice is ignorant, fraudulent, or malicious. See Miscellaneous Writings by Mrs. Eddy, p. 51; Ignorant malpractice might take the form of fear or criticism—even of idolizing a personality.
