The fallacy of euthanasia

From the November 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The angel message that spoke to Mary about the coming of Jesus the Christ included the promise, "Of his kingdom there shall be no end." Luke 1:33; In a sense, this applies to us all individually, because the reality of our true being and the dominion of good over evil never cease and can never be reversed. God, Life, can know no beginning and no end, and there can be, therefore, no point where a death—an ending—can actually take place.

Here is the primary fallacy of euthanasia, which has been defined as inducing painless death for reasons thought to be merciful. This human concept, often prompted by the most humane motives, is based on the mistaken supposition that death is inevitable, not to be resisted beyond a certain point; that when this time arrives, dying should be made as easy and as comfortable as possible.

But Christian Scientists are not in the dying business. We are learning that man's life does not exist in a material body, that our true existence is spiritual, and that instead of being made of physical organs we are formed of ideas. We have proved in our study of Christian Science some ability to overcome physical difficulties by holding in thought the real nature of God and man. So we conclude that it is only the material sense of man, not the real man, which dies. Mrs. Eddy explains this with great clarity: "To say that you and I, as mortals, will not enter this dark shadow of material sense, called death, is to assert what we have not proved; but man in Science never dies. Material sense, or the belief of life in matter, must perish, in order to prove man deathless." Unity of Good, p. 40;
