One morning recently I made my way to a Christian Science Reading Room to find an article published in an early periodical. In my search I gazed upon a whole bookcase full of bound volumes of The Christian Science Journal and the Christian Science Sentinel. Why, within those volumes, I suddenly thought, are thousands of documented testimonies of healing recorded by those whose lives have been restored through Christian Science! The full significance of this fact moved me deeply, and I felt a great surge of love and appreciation for Mrs. Eddy, who discovered the Principle and rules of the healing, restorative ministry of Christ Jesus and his disciples.
This cumulative evidence of spiritual healing accords to Christian Science a place achieved by no other system of healing since Jesus' time. And this massive record of the new birth of persons seeking restoration of mind and body also points to our capacity for even larger demonstrations of the restorative power of Truth.
A man whom I know well suffered with head pains so intense that he was unable to think clearly. A practitioner was called, and treatment in Christian Science was begun. The seriousness of the condition demanded immediate relief. There was no time for doubt or disbelief. Both practitioner and patient knew with certainty that man is spiritual and perfect, and they knew with equal certainty the power of divine Truth to heal. They acknowledged that this abnormal picture of pain and pressure did not proceed from the one Mind, God, and therefore could not persist when it was seen that the patient was in truth the expression of God's eternal being, not a material mortal subject to deterioration or decay.
