The Christian Science Board of Directors announces the appointment of Allison W. Phinney as Manager of Committees on Publication and Committee on Publication for Massachusetts, effective June 5, 1978. Mr. Phinney, who has been Assistant Manager of Committees on Publication for the last seven years, succeeds Dr. J. Buroughs Stokes, who has retired after a long and distinguished career of service to our Cause.
Dr. Stokes served as Manager since June 3, 1968, and prior to that for nine years as Manager of the Washington, District of Columbia, Office of the Committee on Publication. Before that he was Committee on Publication for Pennsylvania. Over all these years he has played a vital role in establishing recognition under various federal and state laws, including social security (Medicare) laws, of the rights of Christian Scientists to depend on prayer alone for care and treatment. He made a major contribution to our winning extension of the copyright of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, and increased recognition of Christian Science from leading insurance underwriters. We feel a deep debt of gratitude to him for his tireless and selfless dedication to the protection of the rights of Christian Scientists throughout the world.
Mr. Phinney has played a key role in Committee on Publication activities for more than eighteen years and has contributed substantially to the department's implementation of its mission under the Manual of The Mother Church by Mrs. Eddy. He was Supervisor of the Editorial Division for five years previous to becoming Assistant Manager. His background is in writing and publishing.
