Taking the plunge

From the August 1978 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science is the springboard, so to speak, to the endless depth of Spirit, infinite God. Our success or otherwise in Science—in grasping and proving it—is very much determined by whether we plunge into the Science of Spirit or are content just to paddle on its shores.

Some people approach the endless immensity of Spirit tentatively. This is quite understandable. But as we grow in spirituality we develop an unreserved willingness to be fully submerged in Spirit. Spirituality extends our vision past the three dimensions of matter. It guides us to new regions of confidence and physical and mental health. To find these, we must be willing to study, pray, probe deeply. We need to reason from a spiritual standpoint and to apply what we're learning more and more consistently to the minutiae of our lives.

The Bible puts into the mouth of God these questions addressed to Job but applicable to us in a different sense: "Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea? or hast thou walked in the search of the depth?" Job 38:16; Materiality, the direct opposite of spirituality, leads only to a very superficial way of life. The material perspective must always be short and shallow. It is not divinely authorized. It is illegitimate. And unsatisfying. It assumes the reality of disease, loneliness, despair, deficiency. But everything real and good is found in the depth and height, the endlessness, of Spirit.
