Testimonies of Healing

Although I attended a Christian Science...

From the October 1979 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Although I attended a Christian Science Sunday School from a very early age, by my late teens I had not really made this teaching my own. My understanding of God's allness and love seemed to have been stunted by material attractions, although I felt it was good to have something like Christian Science "on the shelf" if ever it were needed.

Soon there came a time when I could no longer remain lukewarm in my approach to this Science. A painful abscess that had developed on my body made it progressively more difficult for me to engage in normal activities. After a few token efforts to pray for myself along with a frequent fearful inspection of the condition, I decided to call a Christian Science practitioner for help. However, this decision was made halfheartedly, as I felt a quicker solution might be found by consulting a doctor.

The practitioner prayed for me daily, but with little apparent result. The pain and inflammation seemed to worsen, and my doubts over which type of treatment was best grew. After about ten days I dismissed the practitioner and went to see what a doctor could accomplish. The doctor quickly concluded that he did not have the facilities to deal with the infection and told me to go to the hospital the following morning. His outline of the medical attention that would be involved really woke me up.
